IHCC Chapter #5
President’s Message…….
Well another winter meeting and election has come and gone, and I’m looking forward to warmer weather and show season. I think we had some good members elected to the Board this year and I’m looking forward to working with them to continue all the fun activities our Chapter participates in.
Congratulations to the new Board members, Gary Spina, Joe Neville, & Al Price, and to Jim Pedersen on being re-elected.
I would like to thank John Schade and Gary Van Vark for their service to the board and the chapter.
With any luck the winter weather will be over for our next meeting on April 12th at MIAPI show grounds for the fun day.
Hope to see you all there.
Denny Hammer

Membership Matters...
Snow again. Maybe by the time the newsletter is mailed out we will all wake up and this winter was only a bad dream.
Jim and I had a good trip to Mexico with Jim and Shirley McGarvey. On our 9 day bus tour, we learned a lot about Mexico and the different kinds of people that lived there, from Indians to a Menonnite colony. And different kinds of scenery, from waste land to some of the best farm ground around. But the Copper Canyon was the main attraction.
Always good to get home even with the snow.
Our club is doing fine. We have 465 members as of March 1, 2008. Since the 1st of the year we have had 9 people join the club. They are:
Vernon Ambrosy of Zwingle
Terry Soukup of Springville
Lindsey Nielson of Anamosa
Shirley Cook of Seymour
Rob Eldred of Newton
R Jeff Eldred of Newton
Edwin Gay of Marshalltown
Mike Huber of Marion
Robert Macomber of Blue Grass
I hope many of them can make it to Marshalltown and get acquainted with the club members. Make sure to welcome the new members.
Remember that our club dues run from May – May. That means most of you will need to pay your dues this May. They are $25.00 and can be sent to me or I will be at the Marshalltown meeting if you want to pay then.

Letter From The Editor…
We are thinking of spring after a long winter filled with an abundance of moisture. As many of you, I spent a lot of time outside clearing snow this winter. Both the Cub Cadet with the blade and the one with the snow blower got a workout this year.
I am ready for the weather to warm up and show season to begin. It will be a very busy summer with Red Power Round Up in Missouri, the State Show, and the Farm Progress Show.
This newsletter has some time sensitive material in it. The Iowa Chapter IH Collector’s scholarship information is due by May 1. The Iowa Collector’s Chapter 5 membership renewal at the back of this newsletter is due May 1 as well.
I hope everyone has a fun and safe show season. See you all in Marshalltown.

2008 Iowa State Show….
Upon returning home from a very successful and enjoyable fall meeting, it’s back to work and on to those projects we have put off for the winter months.
Thank you to John Shade and the board for guiding us through an enjoyable and productive year. So many of the club members go the extra mile. Thanks.
After meeting with the Central Hawkeye board and starting to assign specific areas of the grounds for the Chapter 5 summer show, I believe that the Central Hawkeye Board and Club are very eager and willing to accommodate our show in any way possible. In particular the memorabilia collection will be in a lockable secure building with the tractors, trucks, lawn and garden and machinery displays nearby. Camping facilities will be available both on and off the grounds. The sites on the ground with electric power are limited. (The sites were wired before the air conditioned camper era.) More sites will be available with electricity at a nearby campground.
The Waukee Club has purchased a 1946 IHC ‘H’ for a raffle to assist in promoting the IH summer show. Clem Seivert, John Hess and numerous folks are diligently restoring it.
Thanks to Don Rimathe, Don Dass, and Dennis Hammer for your assistance. Everyone remember---I want your comments and suggestions. Let’s get as many IH units as possible to this summer’s show.
Give me a call at 515-290-8534.

50 Years Ago in Farmall Country
(and the 2008 State Show)…...
I almost hate to admit it but I’m old enough to remember when the 460 and 560 series tractors were introduced. I recall seeing them for the first time while attending an IH new product introduction with Dad at the Warren county fairgrounds in Indianola in 1958. I would guess it was in August of that year. I don’t really remember but I suppose they fed us a nice lunch and extolled the virtues of the new 460 and 560 tractors. As a 13 year old lad I was already a Farmall man to the core. I was impressed with those giants and I’m sure I would have bought one if I would have been a little older and more importantly, had any money. They had several new 460 and 560 tractors there, in both gas and diesel versions with semi-mounted #412 and #512 plows in tow. There may have been some pull type plows as well but I’m not sure now. Perhaps some of you were there too and can fill in the foggy areas of my recollections of that day. Please do! Anyway, at the appointed hour the new tractors were started and driven to an area north of town, perhaps a mile or two, for a plowing demonstration. I was mighty impressed with the performance of those powerful new Farmall tractors. They were just cruising along with those, huge for the time, 4 and 5 bottom plows. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t very tough plowing and I suppose was chosen for that very reason.
As time went by a few of the new 6-cylinder 460 and 560 tractors began appearing in our area. In many cases the new owners were less than pleased particularly with the 460's. One neighbor’s 460 was a "drinker" and an overhaul didn’t change it much. Another of our neighbors was unhappy with the power. He claimed his super M would make a "monkey" out of his 460 . “It was a big house with nobody home" he said. Of course the super M probably had fire-crater or M&W pistons and would have kept a 560 on its toes. Pretty soon the rear end up-dates for the new tractors started arriving at the dealerships. Those early model tractors all went in for improvements broken or not, but their reputation (the 460-560 tractors) was tarnished beyond any repair. By 1960 the good folks at Deere had developed a line of fine new tractors with 4 and 6 cylinders and up to more than 80 PTO HP. Many of the disenchanted IH users bought new 3010's and 4010's before IH could get the revolutionary 706 and 806 tractors to the marketplace in 1963. The rest of the story is all too well known and not fondly remembered by those of us who prefer IH equipment.
Fast forward to May of 2002. Suddenly I had the opportunity to buy a 1963 460 gas. The original owner, who was married to my Mom’s cousin, had died several months earlier. His daughters wanted me to have first chance at their Dad’s tractor. They thought I would take good care of it. Those girls always did have good judgment. ha. Their Dad had purchased the tractor new at Armstrong Implement in Ames with a #412 semi-mounted 4-14" plow. It was in nice original condition with a decent running engine and a good TA but needing lots of little things. The plow had been traded many years before. I wasn’t sure I should buy a 460 as much of what I had heard about them was negative. In spite of my misgivings I did purchase it. A good decision! It is one of my favorite tractors. It’s handy for so many jobs. It works great for baling, mowing, and running the auger. It’s perfect on my #200 IH blade. I really like the nice smooth 6-cylinder power. You can’t beat it and its fast hitch for moving machinery parked where you want to mow. You don’t even need to mess with the jacks. I enjoy using it on tractor rides too. The seat is comfortable, the power steering works quite well, and it will pass most 2-cylinders at just above a fast idle. It has a good amount of power in my opinion, will start easily on the coldest day and is just plain handy for lots of jobs around my farm. Thankfully I didn’t let my incorrect pre-conceived opinions keep me from buying this excellent, useful tractor.
Next summer will mark 50 years (I can’t believe it) since these tractors were introduced. So much has changed in agriculture and really in all facets of life during this time that it’s almost incomprehensible. As an impressionable kid that day in Indianola so long ago I was awe-struck with those modern power-houses making their debut. I don’t suppose I thought then it would be a different century before I would own one. By 2002 I had been farming on my own for about 35 years. I had purchased several new and numerous used tractors through years, but never a 460 or 560. As IH oriented as I was and still am, I did have some prejudice against those tractors, wrong though I now feel it was. In reality, after the initial problems were ironed out they proved to be excellent tractors and most served their owners very well.
Next summer we will be featuring the 460 and 560 along with the 140, 240, 340 and 660 series tractors at our summer show near Waukee. The Central Hawkeye Club is working hard planning and preparing a good show for our enjoyment in July. They have lots of good people in their club as well as a great location near Des Moines. Let’s support their efforts by bringing our IH tractors, trucks, equipment and memorabilia of ALL VINTAGES to the show. Unrestored units will be just as welcome as the beautiful ones. I intend to have my 460 there still wearing its factory original paint. They can only be original once you know. Every item at a show represents a piece of history and makes an important contribution to that show’s success. Let’s all work together to make this the best Iowa Chapter 5 summer show ever! See you at Waukee!
